Villa savoye is the seminal work of the French architect Le Corbuiser.
It is situated in Poissy, which is a small town near paris.
Villa Savoye is seen as the origin of modern architectures.
Le corbuiser intended to design a living box that floats above a meadow.
To achieve this, he applied the domino structure, which is an independent structural system that carries floors separate from walls.
In villa savoye, the structure is carried by columns that are in a grid form.
The columns bear the weight of the structure and frees the walls from the load bearing job.
This allows Le corbuiser to reach one of his five points of modern architectures, the screen wall.
These walls are non load bearing, thus they can be built very thin and even be built with glass, which allows the interior to remain contact with the surrounding site. It also allows the application of horizontal window in the living level. It increases the sunlight that goes into the house and adds a sense of openness. Residents can also have a greater view of the surrounding through these horizontal windows.
The domino structure enables le corbuiser to achieve another one of his five points, the free plan. The reinforce concrete frees the layout from supporting walls.
In the free plan, the walls are only used for partitioning.
Therefore the villa has a richer floor plan that seperates the public activity from the private activity.
For Le Corbuiser, the movement route of a building has the same significance as the building itself, as it is the route people experience the building. People gain their impression of a building by linking the successive experiences at different spot of the route.
The major circulation of villa savoye is the ramp at the center and the spiral stair. The contrast of the two forms of these two circulation provides the theme of the whole circulation of the building. The curve against the linear elements dramatize the dynamism of the circulation.
The geometric system of the villa savoye also really interest me. The theme of the geometry of villa savoye is to put the regular geometry of the building against the irregular landscape.
Villa savoye is designed within a non directional orthogonal grid system. Within the grid system, villa savoye explores the tension between curves orthogonal system. This is apparent in both the roof screen and the access volume which induce a sense of dynamism to the form of the building.
The contrast between the curved form and rectilinear slab create the basic configuration of the building.
Le Corbuiser adds complexcity to the form of the building based on this basic configuration.
Biting out part of the form to allow sunlight to penetrate deep into the building.
Piercing the horizontal planes of the slab by the ramp to remain continuity of the building and allows circulation.
The public activity and private activity I analysis are bathing and sun bathing. le Corbusier separates the public activities from the private activiates by a diagonal.
The bathing is more private activity, hence, it is isolated by walls.
